Research has shown that acid-blockers such as Tums can cause gastrointestinal complications and that people who take them in excess are twice as likely to be hospitalized for ulcers.

When people take an antacid it neutralizes the production of hydrochloric acid (HCL) in the stomach. This stomach acid is necessary for proper gastrointestinal functioning.

Nutrition expert A.C. Millett asks, “Was HCL mistakenly put in our digestion process?” He answers, “I don’t think so. Antacids interfere with HCL release and can upset body chemistry resulting in other problems. Long-term use can lead to very serious conditions.”

Unfortunately some people take antacids such as Tums as a calcium supplement. The problem is, in order for the body to absorb calcium, a high level of HCL is needed. After the age of 40, the HCL level in the stomach drops off naturally, so people in this age group will have even more difficulty digesting calcium supplements.

Tums is made from calcium carbonate, the least digestible form of calcium on the market. Calcium citrate is far more easily broken down for absorption.

Millett advised the public, “Let’s quit being misled by antacid ads and the idea that we do not need HCL. No matter what the pharmaceutical companies would like us to believe, use of antacids in any form can lead to health degeneration and disease.”

With the nation’s healthcare and insurance payment system in a state that desperately needs to be renovated and improved, the introduction of more chiropractor provider care could offer positive solutions. According to one recent report, cost savings, care improvements, reduced surgeries and less pharmaceutical drug use could all occur when a chiropractor takes the lead as a primary care physician in an insurance provider network.

Healthcare reform has been bantered about in Washington D.C. for many years. Politicians have voiced concerns and some have tried to do something about it. New administrations entering the White House promise to make changes, yet, over 40 million Americans remain uninsured. COBRA insurance rates for those who lose their jobs but want to continue coverage are astronomical with annual fees of over $4,000 for individuals and $12,000 for families. The cost of surgery and a hospital stay is so enormous that even a short stint in a medical facility could financially wipe out the average individual or family.

The question remains; where lies the solution? The answer might be found in putting chiropractors in charge of a person’s healthcare with programs directed at keeping people well and free from drugs or surgeries.

A recent study showed that when chiropractors are in charge of a person’s healthcare, and where complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) solutions are part of their healthcare network, that not only costs but also the number of clinical visits can be reduced significantly. Consider these results collected over a 7-year period that compared a CAM-oriented primary care physician (PCP) network versus conventional medicine alone.

60.2 percent decrease of in-hospital admissions.

59 percent fewer hospital days.

62 percent fewer outpatient surgeries and procedures.

85 percent fewer pharmaceutical costs.

The clinical and cost utilization information in the report was based on 70,274 member-months in an independent physician association (IPA) network with a chiropractor as the primary care physician. This study compared results with conventional medicine IPA performance for the same health maintenance organization product in the same area and over the same time frame.

Granted, this is only one study performed by one group of researchers. However, what is clearly demonstrated in this quite extensive survey conducted over a significant period of time is this: CAM-oriented programs that use a non-surgical/non-pharmaceutical approach show significant reductions in clinical visits and costs when compared with conventional medicine networks.

With these amounts of savings and improvements in healthcare available, shouldn’t politicians sit up and take notice? More people utilizing CAM services with chiropractors in charge might be just the items needed to put healthcare on the right track in the United States.

People may say they have a “pinched nerve” when they are suffering pain from an unidentified source. It may actually be caused by spinal subluxations, a tunnel syndrome, the referred pain from trigger points, or something else.

So-called pinched nerves are more usually just irritated or inflamed because the bones, joints or muscles of the spine are not in their proper position, or not moving correctly. This condition is the aforementioned “subluxation”, which the doctor of chiropractic specializes in correcting.

Those times when nerves do genuinely become “pinched” include Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Sciatica and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. These involve an injury, spasm or inflammation that causes the surrounding muscles and connective tissue to compress the nerve, resulting in pain. These conditions are called “tunnel syndromes”, and although the chiropractic treatment of these is more complex than dealing with a simple spinal subluxation, they usually respond very well, especially when combined with exercises, stretching, and massage, etc.

Trigger points are very small and tight “knots” in the fibers of the muscle that form when the muscles become chronically overworked or injured. Pain from trigger points is very often referred to other parts of the body that may seem wholly unrelated to the source. Trigger points can be successfully treated by a combination of chiropractic care, stretching, and a precise deep tissue massage known as “trigger point therapy”.

Pain of any sort must be properly diagnosed before it can be effectively treated, especially when it is the nerves that are affected. Otherwise the nerve may end up being permanently damaged. Being told by your doctor that you have a “pinched nerve” should not be viewed as a diagnosis; only as an indication that further investigation by a doctor of chiropractic is required as soon as possible.

A six-week study was performed in order to monitor the changes in severity of symptoms after dietary supplementation of nutritional products in three groups of school children, each having a confirmed diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The dietary supplements utilized in this study were phytonutrients; naturally occurring, food-grade polysaccharides combined with flash freeze-dried, vine-ripened fruits and vegetables.

Also introduced were glyconutrients, which are basic saccharides (sugars) known to be important in cell communication and healthy body functioning.

The 17 subjects were recruited from a local ADHD support group. The first group consisted of five children who were not receiving any drug treatment for the diagnosed disorder. The second group were on a medication-reduction program, where-by their medications were cut back while they were taking the nutritional supplements. And the third group retained their prescribed doses of medication.

In every group, over the course of four observation times, the symptoms of ADHD (including impulsivity, inattention and hyperactivity) decreased, as was reported by their parents and teachers who were given proper assessment scales and tools.

If you think about the mechanics of your neck, you’ll realize it’s not surprising how easily it can be injured. It has amazing flexibility, is constantly on the move, has very little muscular support, but has to support the 14 – 16 pounds of your head. It is like balancing a bowling ball on a stick using only elastic bands.

Consider that your spinal cord runs down a space in the centre of the vertebrae, which protects it from harm. Along large bundles of nerves running out from between each pair of vertebrae, nerve impulses are sent to every part of the body. From your cervical vertebrae, impulses are sent to your arms, and some into your upper back. Thus pain in your arm, such as numbness, tingling, cold, aching, or “pins and needles”, may be referred from the neck. People with neck problems may mistake their pain for carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition in the hands that is often caused by repeating the same repetitive motions for long periods.

Neck problems can also lead to headaches, muscle spasms in the shoulders and upper back, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), inflammation in the middle ear (otitis media), temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), or simply a restricted range of motion and severe tightness in the neck and upper back. Issues from the neck can show up in the upper back because many neck muscles originate there, including the trapezius, the levator scapulae, the cervical paraspinal muscles and the scalenes.

Causes of neck and upper back pain

Most times, neck and upper back pain is the result of not just one factor. Injury may be combined with poor posture, subluxations (misaligned spinal vertebrae), mental stress, or disc problems.

Injuries: Easily the most common injury to the neck is whiplash, the sudden, violent whipping motion of the head in an accident. It is most often associated with a car accidents, but it can happen when playing sport, or any other time the head suffers this particular whipping trauma. When this happens, the supporting muscles, ligaments and other connective tissues in the neck and upper back are damaged, but the full effects of this may not be felt for weeks or even months. This is why anyone who suspects they may have suffered whiplash should be extremely careful not to aggravate it, even if they feel no immediate ill-effects. An assessment should be sought from a chiropractor, in case treatment is needed to minimize the effects and guard against possibly permanent damage. 50% of whiplash victims in one study were shown to still be suffering the effects of the injury many years after settling their insurance claims.

Poor Posture: Poor posture is one of the most common causes of neck pain, and can also cause headaches. Unlike sudden injuries, which we usually know have happened, bad posture occurs over time and is something we soon begin to feel as normal. Everyday activities such as reading in bed can create issues and pain later on, and anyone working on a computer for extended periods is certainly susceptible to developing a forward head posture (FHP) and spinal subluxations. The rule is to keep your neck in a neutral position if possible. Avoid craning or hunching the neck, or remaining in the same position for too long. If this is unavoidable, try to practice correct posture to minimize any problems. Ideally, the head should be kept in a neutral position, back supported, knees slightly lower than your hips, and arms supported.

Subluxations: These are extremely common in the neck and upper back area, thanks to the weight of your head resting on such an unstable part of your spine. The majority of subluxations are centered around four areas:

The top of the cervical spine where it meets the skull

The middle of the cervical spine which supports the greatest weight of the head

The transition between the cervical and thoracic areas of the spine

The middle of the thoracic spine which supports the greatest weight of the upper body

You can check for signs of subluxation yourself. Look in the mirror and see if your head is tilted or if one shoulder rides higher than the other. Does one sleeve appear shorter than the other; does a necklace hang off-center? Ask someone to look from the side and see if your head sits noticeably forward from your shoulders (the aforementioned FHP). Subluxations need to be corrected as soon as possible. Over time, they stress the body, throwing all sorts of problems into areas that are then forced to compensate until everything is out of kilter and pain results.

Stress: Mental and emotional stress causes the muscles to tense, especially those in the back and neck. This “muscle guarding” is a primitive survival response to avoid injury in the face of danger, but it ends up causing injury when it happens for any length of time. If pinching the trapezius muscle causes you to wince, that is a sure sign your muscles are tight and trigger points almost certainly exist. Exercise and deep breathing/relaxation techniques are useful for combating stress.

Herniated Discs: A herniated or bulging disc will put pressure on the nerves that exit the spine through that area. Lumbar discs are more prone to herniating than cervical discs, but trauma such as whiplash can provoke a herniated cervical disc.

A consultation with your chiropractor should be scheduled if you are experiencing any pain in your neck or upper back that does not resolve very quickly.

A new report in Hypertension, Journal of the American Heart Association, states that 65 million adult Americans now suffer from high blood pressure, 30% more than the 50 million a decade ago.
The study didn’t examine reasons for the blood pressure spike, but experts said the fact that the population is getting older and more overweight probably plays a major role.

The study was generated by a new analysis of data collected by the federal government, and found that hypertension increased from about 50 million in the period from 1988 to 1994 to at least 65 million in the period from 1999 to 2000.

“From a public and health professional perspective, it is important to be aware of high blood pressure, to have blood pressure checked regularly, and if blood pressure is elevated, to initiate appropriate counseling and treatment,”said Larry E. Fields, senior executive advisor to the assistant secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, who led the study.

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute recently created a medical classification known as pre-hypertension, which is intended to encourage doctors to alert patients that they are at risk of developing high blood pressure and should take steps to prevent it. Many people can reduce their blood pressure by losing weight, eating better and exercising.

“We hope that this new data will serve as a wake-up call to physicians, other healthcare professionals and the public,” said NHLBI acting Director Barbara Alving. “More aggressive prevention and treatment of high blood pressure is needed.”

While in Arizona for Spring Training, the gifted athlete injured himself due to a fall down a flight of stairs. He was immediately seen by the team’s consulting chiropractor during Spring Training, Dr. Alan Palmer of Scottsdale, Arizona. After the treatment Bonds had this to say:

“The chiropractor helped out a lot. I am 100% better! I’m real fine!

“Your body is being treated like it’s supposed to be [when you receive chiropractic care]. I think it should be mandatory for all athletes to see a chiropractor!”

Colic is a condition that usually appears between the 3rd and 6th week after birth, and is characterized by excessive crying. Most cases resolve after 3 months old. Babies with colic can often be seen drawing their arms and legs in as though in pain, and may turn bright red. It is not known exactly what causes colic, but it is thought that certain conditions may contribute to it, such as an immature and irritated nervous system, food sensitivities, and gastrointestinal upset.

As the state of the spine affects the nervous system, gentle chiropractic adjustments are one suggested course of action, and babies with colic treated by chiropractic frequently show improvement as the spinal irritation eases. Given the traumatic experience of child birth, it is not surprising that babies may experience spinal subluxations that cause problems with their delicate nervous systems. Colic is also seen to provoke an increased need for attention in babies, and more sensitivity to the world around them, both of which suggest a neurological cause.

Colic may also be the result of the diet of both mother and baby. Cow’s milk and other dairy products are one of the chief offenders in the development of colic. Human milk and cow’s milk are not at all interchangeable, and cow’s milk is not a suitable substitute. Cow’s milk contains the sugar lactose which is difficult for newborn babies to digest, plus many proteins that are detrimental to a young digestive system.

Similarly, the food that a baby ends up absorbing from natural breastfeeding may cause colic if the mother is indulging in unsuitable foods, such as those that are spicy or dairy-based. It hopefully goes without saying that alcohol and tobacco should be totally out of the question for a breastfeeding mother. The best diet is one that is quite bland, and high in (non-dairy) protein, at least for the first three or four months of breastfeeding.

If your baby suffers from colic, here is some helpful advice:

Seek regular chiropractic treatment for your baby, especially in the first 4 months

A warm water bottle on your baby’s stomach is soothing, as is a warm bath

Rock your baby in a chair or cradle, or take them out in a car seat for a drive

Gently rub your baby’s stomach

Smaller, more regular feedings may help

If using baby formula, avoid dairy or soy-based products

Healthy young adults between 17 and 24 years old who average
5 or fewer hours of sleep per night run 3 times the risk of distress than those
averaging 8 or more hours sleep, according to a study in the September issue of
the journal Sleep.

An 18-month study by the George Institute on Global Health,
involving 20,822 young people in New South Wales, Australia, revealed a clear
link between lack of sleep and breakdowns.

The study compared sleep durations to a baseline of 8 – 9
hours of sleep a night. For each hour less than 8 a night, the risk of distress
increased by 14 percent. Those sleeping less than 6 hours a night were twice as
likely to experience distress as the baseline sleepers.

At the outset of the study, 30 percent of participants slept
for 7 – 8 hours per night, and 18 percent reported sleeping less than 7 hours.
Fewer than 2 percent of study subjects had an extremely short sleep duration of
less than 5 hours per night.

Participants without distress when getting 8 hours sleep who
then reported sleeping 5 hours or less per night were 3 times more likely to be
distressed as long as a year later. Those who were already experiencing some
sort of distress at the 8-hour baseline had a 5 percent increase in problems
for each hour of sleep less than the baseline. Participants who routinely got
more than 9 hours sleep a night showed no distress or emotional symptoms
associated with sleep.

“In young adults already experiencing distress, the fewer
hours they sleep the worse the outcome across the range of sleep hours,” said
Nick Glozier, author of the study. “Short sleep duration increases the risk of
a new onset of distress only among the very shortest sleepers, and doesn’t
appear to have an impact in young adults in good mental health with moderately
short sleep durations, such as 7 hours a night.”

The relationship between the number of hours of sleep
someone gets and the onset of distress is complex, says the study. Although
short sleep duration appears to be a real risk for distress, it is possible
that sleeping less is a symptom of a previous problem, or reflects a second
condition that is hindering the first one from resolving. But this study’s
findings strongly suggest that recent increases in levels of distress reported
by young adults may be related to changes in their sleep patterns.

“The increased reporting of stress seen in many countries
over the past decade or two in this young adult population may reflect
lifestyle or other changes that lead to too few hours of sleep,” Glozier said.

According to the authors, it would be unwarranted to rush
out and try to increase the amount of sleep all young adults get. But we should
look for young adults who are experiencing distress, and correct inadequate
sleep time if that’s found. We should also look for those on extremely short
sleep schedules and encourage them to get more sleep to prevent potential
problems. Other studies have shown that sleep time can often be increased by
recovering some of the time spent watching TV, playing video games and using
the Internet before going to bed.
